Huge blow for Arsenal and Unai Emery
Arsenal have been dealt a big blow after striker Alexandre Lacazette was handed an extended Europa League ban after his sending off last week.
The Frenchman has been pretty important for the Gunners since joining from Lyon and has scored 10 goals and assisted five in 25 Premier League appearances this season.
While Lacazette has only scored one goal in the Europa League, he is still an important player.
Though, he was sent off in his last European clash with BATE Borisov.
Lacazette threw his elbow backwards in frustration during a tussle with a BATE player, connecting with his face.
That meant he would miss the second leg at the Emirates which took place on Thursday with Arsenal winning 3-0.
Now, Lacazette has been handed an extended ban which means he will miss both the last-16 legs vs Rennes.
No last-16 games for Lacazette
The news was confirmed today, with the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) confirming Lacazette’s ban.
As quoted by the Daily Mirror, the CEDB confirmed that the game against BATE on Thursday counting towards Lacazette’s ban and as a result, he will miss the next two matches.
“The CEDB has decided to suspend the player Alexandre Lacazette for three (3) UEFA club competition matches,” their statement explained.
“The player, having already served one match, will be suspended for a further two (2) matches.”
While Arsenal should be able to beat Rennes without Lacazette, this will no doubt be a big blow for Unai Emery.
