Jose Mourinho suggests future captaincy role for Man United fan favourite

Manchester United supporters were overjoyed when they saw that Paul Pogba was not only going to start last week’s Premier League opener against Leicester City, but also wear the captain’s armband.

Antonio Valencia was named club captain following Michael Carrick‘s retirement in May but a calf strain suffered during pre-season has forced the 33-year-old to miss the opening fixtures of the 2018-19 campaign.

Many fans deem Pogba fit to lead the team out on the pitch week-in-week-out permanently, and Jose Mourinho has suggested that it could very well be a possibility in the future.

“We thought, I think it was before the game against Basel, [Pogba] is a young guy, with a good personality, made in the academy, normally a starting line-up player, so he has the conditions to be a captain in the future.

“In the continuity of this, with no Antonio in the team, he was the captain and for the next match I don’t think Antonio’s going to play, so he’ll be the captain again.

“But one day when Antonio comes back, Antonio will be the captain again.”

Although Valencia will continue his role as skipper once he returns to action, it does seem like a great possibility that the 25-year-old midfielder will be the next permanent Man United captain.

That’s if he’s still representing the club once Valencia leaves in the next couple of years, with heavy speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona or former club Juventus this summer.

He’ll definitely be acting as captain for Sunday’s trip down to Brighton & Hove Albion though, so let’s hope for another stellar performance to go with it from our no. 6.
